Default US Military Building Cell Phone Jammers

http://www.cellular-news.com/story/9530.shtml

In an effort to cripple enemy communications, the US military is developing small devices that can be launched, air-dropped, or manually placed in conflict zones. These devices 4-inch wide devices are then said to "deny an adversary use of its communications while not interfering with friendly military and commercial radio communications."

Each of these devices carries a price tag of $10,000 but that is much cheaper than the current solution which involves using aircraft from hundreds of miles away. Making the investment reasonable are the facts that the battery in each device should last 2 months and the devices can be collected and redeployed.

"The idea is to litter the battlefield with these small objects. Once a cylinder hits the ground, it checks itself out. If everything is working properly, the fins will erect and make the device stand up. An inflatable antenna goes up and it generates a radio signal. They form a network. Wolf networks find other wolf networks and eventually find a path back to the command center. The devices' strength is in their collective use."

Fascinating stuff! Check out the article on cellular-news for more details. The military expects to start testing prototypes in 18 months.
