IDC is done counting second quarter's device shipments and has some interesting statistics to report. Total world wide shipments grew by 19.2% year-over-year. It's a fast growing market and we are still in a phase where early adopters represent the majority of customers, which means the speed of growth is likely to increase even more. Early adopters are looking more to the advanced "converged devices" that are both voice and data capable. IDC reports that the market for converged devices grew a whopping 330.7% year-over-year and now represents 1.7% of the total mobile phone market. Nokia maintains its number one position in both voice and data centric devices and ships more devices than Motorola, Samsung, Siemens and Sony Ericsson together.
One interesting detail to note is in the list of "Top 5 Vendors, Worldwide Converged Device Shipments". It takes "only" 200,000 devices to occupy the number two position and 10.2% of the market. That does not seem like an impossible task for the Smartphone camp to accomplish in any of the coming few quarters, does it? I wonder, however, how IDC would report that given that they are so device maker oriented. Would all Smartphones, branded differently by many carriers, end up in "Other"?
