"Can you really imagine one billion mobile phones shipped? According to the IDC (IDC is owned by International Data Group, which also owns Computerworld.), 2006 was a record year for mobile phone shipments in which for the first time over 1 billion units were shipped! Amazing! This was largely due to a strong 4th quarter where 294.4 million units were shipped. That's a lot of RAZR's for Christmas! But the truth of the growth is coming from developing nations in Asia. China alone fueled a great deal of the growth by contributing over "461.1 million mobile phone subscribers, adding 67.7 million new users during the year"."
