Official Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM Update for Motorola Q9h
"Mike, who'd previously let us know about that leaked out 6.1 update has been watching Motorola's site like a ravenous hawk hovering over a field mouse. That mouse has finally popped out of its hole: head on over to Motorola's site for the official Motorola Q9h 6.1 Update. You're going to need the standard complement of update tools before you get going: Windows XP or Vista, internet connectivity (the software just might be calling home to check to see if your Q9h is legit), and a full backup before you update. Like all ROM updates, this one will wipe your device, so get prepared." 
It is time to start backing up all of your data! Motorola has finally come around to giving the Q9h the old update treatment. For those that have not had a chance to use the sliding panels before, they are actually quite fun. Light years ahead of the incredibly plain coma inducing default homescreen that came equipped with Windows Mobile 6 and below. |

A few heads up on this. One it seems to work well and my Q seems more responsive. If you have an unlocked phone, this will relock the phone. Also the data setting for ATT ICS and media net are locked. That is causing me a problem, because I had the phone unlocked by ATT for use with an old blue plan. I put the info in for mmode and can get the browers working, but programs such as newsbreak are trying to use the media net connection and not working.
So both a heads up and a hope that someone has a solution.

Seriously, does every post on anythin WM related have to bash its interface? Now its gone from just ugly to coma inducing? Why didnt anyone notice this all these years of using, reviewing and RECOMMENDING WM devices? All because one phone was released with a nice interface (and reduced functionality compared to WM devices but this always seems to be conveniently forgotten every time) every single WM device released is panned for its interface. All the advantages, differing form factors and flexibilty is ignored and the only thing mentioned is the interface, the plus points are NEVER talked up.
Makes one wonder why sites like this continue to exist.

Polite question - do you look back at the Windows 3.1 days and wonder why no one noticed its lack of a Start button and taskbar? Innovation allows us to identify deficiencies in past and present products and move forward to create bigger and better things. The Windows Mobile UI certainly needs work if it's to jump on that "touch" bandwagon popularised by that fruity company you so studiously avoided mentioning. 
You mention that people seem to have conveniently forgotten about this one device's reduced functionality. I don't think that's the case. It's simply unnecessary delivering a spiel on that every time a discussion on interface surfaces. There's a time and place for everything; people will talk about reduced functionality when appropriate. |

I've always bashed the Windows Mobile interface. Why? Because I knew it could always be better and with the release of Windows Mobile 6.1 Microsoft proved me right. Microsoft puts in a little elbow grease and we get an incredible user interface, there was no reason to have the incredibly simple and unattractive one of the pass.
The wonderful thing about Windows Mobile though was even with the incredibly ugly default user interface of the past, we still had customizable homescreens and a slew of really great homescreen designers to choose from so even though Microsoft always lost points on the design side, they always made up for it by choice. |

To be fair, the WinMo UI is always miles ahead of the Blackberry's, which IMO is the ugliest of all. 6.1 just makes it even better. Now, are you happy?
