Default .mobi TLD Approved

http://www.russellbeattie.com/notebook/1008531.html

"So this make sense, and not too long ago I was promoting the idea of a standardized way of ensuring a mobile version for your visitors with a mobile. prefix or a /mobile or /xhtml ending. It will now make sense to have a .mobi version of your site as well. However, I still worry - as Sir TBL and others have - that we'll be creating a separate and probably lower-quality web at least at first."

Yawn. I guess this is exciting for some people. I have always thought that the site should just figure out which browser is being used and provide a formated page accordingly. On the other hand it does open up domain names that might be tied up otherwise. I gotta ask though, I have yet to go to a .info or .biz site. Are there any?

Lets see... MOBI is 6, pause, 666, 22, 444 for a grand total of 9 key press's. Ya, good choice on the TLD guys!

Why not:

.MD (2 keys - 6, 3 - Mobile Device)
.MW (2 keys - 6, 9 - Mobile Web)
.MB (3 keys - 6, 22 - MoBile)

Ultimately, it should be up to the site to detect and configure the requested page for the type of device thats calling it.

Yes, .mobi is a very stupid idea. Even if your site can't present its content based on the browser being used, is it really much easier to say "Go to www.stupid.mobi" than "Go to mobile.stupid.com"?

I guess there's a sucker born every minute. It's just sad to see that they're working for ICANN.

P.S. Yes, there are .info and .biz domains. In fact, My 2 Cents.info used to be a Pocket PC site (but now seems to be some French site). And I own SVVG.biz (but only because some loser domain "broker" had svvg.com).

However, I think .info's biggest claim to fame may be that some registrars were giving away free one-year .info registrations a while back. That lead to tons of spam with .info domains -- the Internet equivalent of throw-away cell phones.

First. I know that .md is already in use (I've seen them being pitched to doctors). Second, I believe two-letter TLDs are restricted for country usage.

Ya, I think you're right. My point was more that I could come up with some good ones that made more sense in all of 2 minutes. While these guys are spending months and months and they just can't get it right.

Have they approved the .xxx for adult sites yet? Or are they still ignoring that sector?
