Microsoft and QUALCOMM to Revolutionize the Next Generation Smartphones

"QUALCOMM Incorporated and Microsoft Corp. today jointly announced a collaboration to enable the porting of the Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system to QUALCOMM’s Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipsets. The result of the companies’ collaboration will enable device manufacturers to develop affordable, feature-rich and attractive Windows Mobile-powered phones with MSM chipsets while shortening their product development times. Support for the Windows Mobile platform on QUALCOMM’s highly integrated MSM solutions also gives users extended battery life while running a wide variety of business and entertainment applications, such as Microsoft Office Mobile and Windows Media® Player Mobile, along with third-party offerings."



Great news from Microsoft and Qualcomm today. The net result of this should be a reduced time frame for getting handsets to the market because manufacturers can reduce their development work required. The MSM chipset takes care of CDMA2000 1XEV-DO and UMTS features along with hardware accelerated multimedia, multi-megapixel camera support, 3D graphics and Assisted GPS engine. Qualcomm is expected to have this available along with support for Windows Mobile 5 in the second half of 2006. Hopefully, that means we should see handsets with this by the end of the year.

This to me seems like a big win for the WinMo platform. Qualcomm has recognized them as a major cellular OS maker. 8)

Qualcomm, so I'm guessing that means only Sprint and Vzw here in the states. Maybe this will help the CDMA get with the program.

Right, the MSM chipset seems to focus on CDMA technology. And that's not a bad thing. The WinMo CDMA market has been pretty lacking. So this might be a welcome change. 8)
