IDC Looks Beyond Telecom Chaos

IDC recently released a study called "Beyond Telecom Chaos: Rethinking Next-Generation Services in the VoIP Environment" (IDC #29867) which discusses VoIP (voice over IP) and how new telecom technology enables enhanced services and applications.

"The report suggests that Microsoft may emerge as a major force in telecom in several years’ time, providing formidable competition for IP-PBX vendors such as Cisco, Avaya, Alcatel, Siemens, Nortel, and 3Com."

The telecom market moves, slowly but surely, towards IP based communications. Over time infrastructure is upgraded and pushed into IP-standards. IP enabled, data centric mobile devices is destined to become critical pieces of this puzzle. Interesting to realize that Microsoft works both on the client and server side of this bigger picture development.
