Default Engadget Mobile's Hands-on with the Samsung i640v

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/...-samsung-i640v/

"Windows Mobile Standard devices are a whole heck of a lot more refined now than they were in the early days, aren't they? Manufacturers have figured out what form factors seem to work best, the quality of the hardware has improved by leaps and bounds (though it admittedly can't ever really be good enough), and the handsets continue to find ways to squeeze blood out of the WinMo 6 stone by way of new capabilities and new skins. The i640v from Samsung -- a Vodafone exclusive for the moment, hence the "v" -- represents the pinnacle of everything Samsung has learned about making these non-touchscreen smartphones over the last several years, and we can honestly say it's one of the most refined and most attractive Windows Mobile phones we've ever used, period. Samsung, T-Mobile, AT&T -- we implore you, bring a version of this to the States, preferably one with 3G that we can use, k? Thanks!"

Chris Ziegler from Engadget Mobile was lucky enough to have a little hands-on time with the Vodafone's Samsung i640v. This is one slick looking handset. Tiny, compact, shiny and it even includes the same scroll wheel as found on the Samsung Blackjack II. All I can say is that I wholeheartedly agree with Chris — this is one device that I would love to see here in the States. I envy all of our readers that are on the Vodafone network!

Can't put it any better. I'm using it for some time now and must say I never looked back to a touchscreen phone.

The slider is of very high quality, height-speed 3G network support makes browsing fun, the screen is simply the best I've ever seen (just use the build in Google maps with satellite view to be blown away!) and the scroller is just plain great - can't imagine having a phone without it (you can use it as a scroll wheel or as a standard directional pad when pressing it).

Of course there's always room to improvement: You have to get used to the heat-sensitive buttons (which for my taste react to lightly) and I wished it had GPS and WLAN.

Finally regarding its design: whether you like it depends as always on your personal taste. I really like it (a bit 'retro' maybe giving its shiny border). A graphics designer and Apple fan who walked into my office and saw that phone was really amazed by its design - so I guess it can't be that bad

Anyway: It's great to see that this phone finally gets some attention - it would really deserve to be more prominently featured.

Thorsten

Oh man, I wish they would bring this handset to North America so I could use it too
