Default Audiovox SMT5500 Also Known As HTC Vivida, On Display At CTIA

http://www.mpx200.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=2386&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0

Rey from Mobile Gadget News is hanging out at CTIA (Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association) show in San Francisco and he has posted a ton of pictures from the show. Including this one:

User submitted image

The Audiovox SMT5500 was previously known as the HTC "Vivida" CDMA phone. I'm not sure if you can make it out in this picture, but the bottom of this phone slides up to cover the keypad. We don't know much about this phone, other than Audiovox seems to be looking for a carrier to pick it up. You can check out a larger version of this picture, and all the other pictures Rey has snapped, over in the MGN Gallery.

Update: It seems that Rey might not have all the information on the Vivida after all. It appears that Sprint will be launching this phone! Check out this post for more information.

aside the fact it looks icky, they say it's PPC 2003, surely with a 176 x 220 screen they mean smartphone 2003, and hopefully SE. and it has GPS, nice.

Looks like a prototype.

PPC2003 has to be a typo.

Thanks to the obvious PPC 2003 typo, I decided to read the banner closely.

gpsOne?

It is not any other GPS. It is a combo GPS. Uses satellites and cell towers both. 8O Why?

Its well know that that GPS satellite signals cannot be received indoors. But cell tower signals can get through. And when outside, really outside, like camping or outside the city, there are no cell towers.

So gpsOne works in both the scenario. Amazing.

In case anyone wants to know about MSM6050.

yes i looked that up too, it looks like a cool technology. bundle that with a good mapping solution and you'd have a killer app, i just don't want to pay the prices that PocketPC solution currently retail for.

I am sure QualComm has patents on this technology. And will probably available to only the CDMA world. :-( I hope the GSM world can also benefit from this concept.

But you are right riki. I have the MPx220 + (very portable/pocketable) BT GPS. But everytime in the last week or so I have wanted to use the GPS program on the phone, I didn't have the GPS sensor with me. :-( This will popularize location based apps.

I am guessing that the Microsoft MapPoint Location Services team is right now trying to get one these phones in their hands for all the cool demos they give. ;-)

Nifty and all...but if the carrier doesn't have gpsOne turned on across the network?

i600 has GPS capabilities but AFAIK, Verizon is only transmitting the data via cell towers in limited testing locations.

Let's hope that with this one. The customer would have the ability to turn on/off the Satellite GPS and the carrier will control the cell tower A-GPS piece. So at least one of the location technique will be available.

I am sure the carrier may still have control over it both and mess us up. :-(
