Yep, that pisses me off as well.
It started out as great freeware open source media player named Betaplayer, developed by a guy somewhere in Europe (I think Hungary) who calls himself Picard. Great guy, he responded quickly to user's suggestions in forums, and incorporated their suggestions in the next release.
Then it was somehow appropriated by the Core folks (I don't know if they bought it from Picard or what), and it continued to improve (still by Picard) as TCPMP (The Core Pocket Media Player), still free. (I'm sure you could still find TCPMP available for download on the web. A great free media player, plays almost anything, including Matroska, etc.)
But then Core decided to go commercial with it. It has been over a year now, since they started the commercial Coreplayer. (No argument with that, as people need to eat and pay the bills.) When they first announced its release, however, they said a trial version would become available concurrently. They also announced a new open source version called---------Betaplayer! (They have a web site called betaplayer.com, which has announced: "Coming Soon", for more than a year now.) When asked about the trial version of Coreplayer, they said that was coming soon, but in more than a year, it has not come out. (What could be so difficult, about slapping a time restriction on an app, to stop working in a month, if not registered?)
So, they just advertise how great they are, and expect people to buy it, without trying it out, although almost every other mobile app has a trial version. (And what absurd ad copy--"the center of the Corecodec Universe" (is that somewhere close to heaven ;-) ), and "empower the Corecodec community". (Wow, mom, I want to be a member of that wonderful community! Better buy the app!)
A lot of people complained about the earlier versions, saying it was not nearly as good as the freeware TCPMP. (Perhaps that's why they don't want a trial version, as people wouldn't buy it.) I tried one on a friend's phone, and it was pretty bad.
I don't know if this newer version is better, however. But without being able to try it out, as I can do with almost all other mobile apps, I am not going to fork out that dough. The price is also high, for a mobile app. Other mobile media players, like Conduit's, etc., cost more like$14.95 or $19.95. So, even at this "special bargain discount" of $24.95, this app is no bargain.
(By the way, I don't know what happened to Picard. The last times I looked at the corecodec forums, where he used to communicate with users a lot about TCPMP, I never saw any more posts by him, basically since Coreplayer was released. (I haven't looked there recently though.) I wonder if he got fed up with what the Core folks did with his product, and left the project? Anyone know?)
