We got an email from Mark Tirschwell, creator of PocketDay (a Pocket PC PIM app written in .NET) about his newest project, crsContacts:

"A complete replacement for the Smartphone Contacts application. Support many more advanced features including:
  • Quick contact detail view in-line with 1 button access
  • Single line or Double Line View with selectable Font Sizes
  • Alternating Colors
  • Dial any number quickly
  • Send emails to contacts
  • Sort by File As (default), First Name, Last Name and Company
  • Filter by Category
  • Create New Contacts
  • Edit existing contacts
  • New re-designed User Interface"
This is now in beta and Mark is looking for people with Smartphone 2003 devices to try it out. You can check out screenshots and download it now from his website.

Looks like it solves one of the biggest shortcoming of the built-in Smartphone contact app (i.e. not displaying numbers while browsing).

Is there any compeling reason why this application cannot also run on Smartphone 2002 ?

Also, will MSFT change their logo-certification policy regarding this type of application ? According to the logo certification document, such an application cannot be logo-certified by MSFT because it duplicates a functions of one of the built-in application.

I'm more than happy with the built-in contacts app. This does not add that much more functionality for it to be worth installing for me....even if I had a phone with 2003 on it.

Yes, it's written in .NET.

I thought the requirement was that you couldn't duplicate the data used by a built in app. This uses Pocket Outlook API and pulls from the same database as the built in app so it should be fine if he chooses to get it logo certified.

Default Caller ID

Any successful Contacts application must be able to display Caller ID on the first ring, preferably on the LCD screen on the outside also.

The MS Smartphone built in software will automatically deal with the Caller ID, etc. crsContacts uses the same Pocket Outlook database, so it's fully compatible with everything on the phone.

It would be a most helpful feature if one could generate an appointment from an enhanced Contacts manger, or conversely, associate a Calendar event with a particular contact or set of contacts.
