AvantGo Beta for Smartphone Released
"AvantGo is a free service that delivers thousands of mobile websites to consumers on their handheld personal digital assistants (PDAs) and smartphones. Thousands of companies and dozens of major brands, including American Airlines, CNET, GM, Rolling Stone and The New York Times, provide mobile website content on the AvantGo service. With more than 7 million registered subscribers all over the globe, AvantGo is the world's leading mobile internet service." I'm glad to see this finally come out for the Smartphone. I have some nostalgia for this because it was how I discovered Pocket PC Thoughts years ago when I got my first Pocket PC. Give it a try. You may just like it.

Funny thing, Everytime these guys would send us a press release I would fire back asking if this meant that they now support Windows Mobile Smartphones. Not once did I get a reply. Now, they launch a Smartphone beta and they don't even send us a notice.

I used to enjoy them on earlier PPCs, but they seemed to have spotty support of even WM2003 devices. They went their own viewer route instead of just viewing in a browser (PIE) and things never seemed to work right. I weened myself off of them using RSS and connected devices, WiFi, GPRS, and haven't looked back. On a phone device, not sure I would value an off line viewer.

AvantGo is still around? Who would have thought?
I agree with Sven, now we are connected pretty much all the time and have some nice RSS options, why would AvantGo be needed anymore?
Just today I was at a rather boring seminar (other than my part) and being able to keep up with the news and my email using the hotel WiFi was great.

It is true the thing is kind of outdated now. Like I said it was out of nostalgia.

Is it? There's a difference between reading an RSS feed and downloading specially formatted HTML for off line viewing. Does today's Avantgo actually read RSS feeds?
