Default Agile to Start Charging for Messenger

http://www.agilemobile.com/announcement.html

"Three years ago Agile Mobile set out to develop a truly “agile” instant messaging client to provide seamless access to the instant messaging networks, wither it be from the bus, the beach or the gym, without sacrificing any of the functionality and power of the conventional desktop clients. During the initial development period we have allowed our loyal user base to use Agile Messenger for free. We want to thank everyone for their invaluable feedback, suggestions and bug reports, which have allowed us to make Agile Messenger into what it is today. Agile Messenger is currently the most widely used and feature rich instant messaging and communication tool for mobile devices in the world."

Agile plans to start charging a maximum of €2.99 per month through your carrier, so it will just appear on your monthly bill. At this point, there is no indication if they will support the monthly subscription in North America or not. However, if you don't want the monthly charge, they do make a comment about buying the software for a one time charge of €19.99 - which sounds like a much better deal to me. I personally don't use Agile anymore, MSN Messenger does everything I need. I'm sure that isn't the case for all of you.

I don't understand. Doesn't Agile supply a single interface to multiple IM systems? It doesn't connect to it's own server which aggregates IM traffic does it? Just seems that a subscription would be an odd way to market this if it is the former.

I don't use it because I don't use multiple IM clients, but if I did, I would have no problem paying a one time software fee, or even upgrade fees, but a montly license?

I also noticed that in their downloads is 'Agile Messenger for Windows Smartphone BETA' and 'Agile Messenger for Windows Smartphone 2003 BETA'. I thought only MS sold Betas

I need this software as it's the best multi-client IM, in my opinion. I need AIM, MSN and Yahoo! So it works perfectly for me.

I like the software as is for $19.99.
But if I need to pay a monthly charge...I better see some improvements, added features and more stability.
