Samsung Develops 8GB MicroSD Card

"Wow, it seems like we were just marveling over the introduction of the world's first 8GB SD card a few moons back. Ah, that's right, we were. Alas, Samsung took it to heart that SD doesn't cut it for your average cellphone (they run a bumpin' mobile business, after all), announcing that it has managed to pack a full eight gigabytes into the microSD form factor for mid-2008 production. That's particularly timely considering that 4GB examples haven't even gotten into widespread circulation yet -- "8GB" just has a nicer ring to it -- not to mention that the new card handily surpasses SDHC guidelines with 16MB/s reads and 6MB/s writes."



Did that read that right? Did they really say 8GBs? Do the current generation of Windows Mobile Standard devices even support the Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) format? If they do not, I hope Samsung releases an upgrade to the Blackjack that does when they release this card.

I think it's really time to start building this kind of storage into the device itself.

upgrade or none, i think we can create several partitions on the memory card and have our wm's detect it as multiple storage medium... sure did the trick for me on my voyager ^_^

Agreed, memory cards don't need to get bigger although it's nice, devices need to have larger memory capacity built-in. I've been wanting more memory in my WM devices for years and only one or two companies have actually stepped to the plate even though it's only 256MB plate. It's better than nothing but it's time to go further.
Apple has seen this and added it to their upcoming iPhones (4gb & 8gb) with the only real thing remaining is the ability to create docs, spreadsheets and add 3rd party software. MS better start rethinking it's strategy. But someone in my shoes with a 4700 for example wouldn't mind giving up my smartphone for an iPhone with a lot more memory since I do all my work on my 4700 anyway. All that to say, where are the 8gb WM devices.

I don't think an SDHC card will work in a non-SDHC reading phone, however many partitions you make. Someone correct me if I have that wrong, but that's what I had read.

I tried using a 4GB MiniSD in my old C600. It wasn't an SDHC card, but the phone still couldn't use it properly, even when split into 2x2GB partitions. It seems there is a limit to the total capacity of a card that phones will handle, and in that case it was 2GB max.

I have an HTC Vox right now. I'd like to think I could use a 4 or 8GB card one day, but I'd certainly be waiting for someone else to try it first!

Yeah, that seems to be what I recall too. ( http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/fo...ic.php?t=12342 )I hope that will change in the future, because I filled my 2GB card and now I'm swapping between cards depending on what I need to do. And that's no fun Thankfully, the BlackJack doesn't hide the memory card under the battery

I haven't tried one for myself either but I have read that some have had success with non-SDHC devices reading 4GB cards. It is possible however that not all or at least early 4GB cards weren't SDHC at the time. Can anyone confirm that? I do reacll seeing these cards out before the SDHC spec was put in affect.

Yes, there are lots of non-SDHC 4 GB cards. Those are the only ones that work in existing devices. They're only available in SD and MiniSD, though, no 4 GB MicroSD cards.

whoops, my bad. not really sure if this idea works coz ive never put my hands on an sdhc card ever... lol.

but jerry's right, why do they even bother with the microdrives they put in newer devices? a big flash drive is so much better - less power consumption, less space occupied and in most cases, much faster too ^_^
