I wonder how much money they save by not making it quad band. I would think it would be cheaper to just make them all quad band.

maybe they overstocked on the triband chips and have to dispose of them before getting quadband chips. either that or they don't want to piss off hp and palm by making quadband devices that can be used in NA, which I think has the biggest market for hp and palm phones [htc is the manufacturer for the hw65xx and 69xx and the palm Treos right?] anyway i'm just throwing ideas around [I'm out of town for work and it's 2am here and I can't sleep :P ] and not defending htc though. I too would like to see all devices be quadband that way you can stay in touch with a single device where ever you go [or most of the places in world atleast]

Dopod 595 fantastic!
After a long wait to get my Dopod, including a struggle to find an English-language copy in Hong Kong, I'm completely delighted with it. Sure, I'd be happier if it had Wifi, but it already does 90% of what my old Dopod 900 could do, with far more style and convenience. Full marks.
And if anyone knows more about how to activate the HSDPA feature, I'd welcome it. Right now, clicking on that shortcut in Windows/Startup does precisely nothing. Still a great phone, though ...

Sorry for the late reply.
HSDPA should already be enabled out-of-the-box. Are your download rates not reflecting that? Have you ensured that you are indeed on an HSDPA network?

HI, Awesome review darius. Ive been drooling over this phone for sometime now..my only question is.. are you sure that this wont work in north america?? because the HTC MTeoR supports the same bandwidth as the DOPOD 595 and ive heard of people using the HTC MteoR here... is there any way to confirm if it will work on Tmobile in the states?? I dont wanna drop $500 bucks for a shiny paperweight. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well, it's not a case of it not working in North America entirely. It will work fine if your carrier uses either 900MHz, 1800MHz, or 1900MHz GSM, but if your carrier uses 850MHz (as is the case with many North American carriers), then you'll be in a spot of trouble. Because I'm Australian, I can't say I know too much about T-Mobile's current networks, but last I recall, they use 1900MHz exclusively with the odd bit of 850MHz for roaming. So, if you were to use this phone, you may find coverage to be a little spotty. I do suggest you contact T-Mobile to double check.

I can't think of any that stock an unlocked Dopod 595 specifically. However, OW has the i-mate SP JAS (essentially the same device, but different branding) for $779 AUD (roughly $600 USD).
