Default Yeah! Cable internet is here!

Finally! I live in San Jose, about 2 plus miles from the nearest PO for DSL. My DSL speed is just under 400k.

Comcast recently dug up the street and upgraded all the lines and fibers in the area. I called them last week and was told internet would not be available until near the end of the year. Today a lady knocked on the door and said that our node was now hooked up and we could get cable internet. Also, if I gave her a copy of my DSL statement, I would get 3 mbps down/128k up for $29.99 for a year.

Gee, my DSL is nearly twice that. So, should I get 8 times the speed for half the price?

BTW, that's a rhetorical question.

Yeah - the insane distances that have to be covered poses many problems.

Most DSL here is about twice the cost of cable. They also, last time I checked, require you to have a phone line installed--and I live with 3 roommates, we all have cell phones, we don't want or need a house phone. So that would be another $20 to the cost. Hence why we have cable, even though Comcast has treated us like garbage and we've had a million problems and it took us 6 weeks after we moved in and 5 appointments to finally get the stuff installed and we hates them for ever. Because the alternatives suck!

Default DSL speeds, pricing, etc

There is an option through my DSL company to get up to 6 MBPS. The problem is that it still relies on distance from the CO.

BTW, you get what you pay for with so many things. My DSL company is Speakeasy. They have superb tech support and tremendous uptime. They are pricey. My next door neighbors opted for SBC Yahoo DSL and have had many 'issues'. I've been with Speakeasy for a couple of years and not had a single problem.

They now have what they call 'dry service'. You can get DSL without having a phone line. Thus, a single person might use their cell phone as their main phone line and get DSL without having to have the POTS (plain old telephone service).

Hm where are you? I don't think anything like that is offered around here yet.

Steve should I start another thread just for ranting about Comcast? It's strange, I've had them for cable forever, and had them for internet last year, and I never had any problems. Suddenly now they just can't seem to stop screwing up. Weird how that works sometimes.

Send a message via ICQ to maximus

A DSL with 512kbps downstream in indonesia cost IDR 1,000,000 a month (IDR 650,000 to the internet provider, and IDR 350,000 to the phone company). That is USD120 a month.

You guys are so lucky.
