Ya know, I don't think we can blame anyone but ourselves for people's unawareness of Sysadmin Day. Think of all the ways you could "hint" to people that the day is coming up:
1. Edit the /etc/issue files with a friendly reminder.
2. Windows logon messages are way to boring (i.e. "Unauthorized use of this computer... blah blah blah") Spice them up.
3. Email footers weren't made to say "This file screened" or "This email may contain secure data", throw in a Sysadmin plug there too. If it's a HTML-based email, throw in a link to your Amazon wish list.
4. Corporate intranets would do well to have a "About Sysadmin Day" sidebar on the page where users report computer problems.
5. Mandatory wallpapers are just BEGGING for a plug, as are marquee screen savers if you can pull it off.
6. 2 words: Group Policy
7. FTP logon banners
8. Webmail logon screens
9. Set up a filter to change all outgoing emails which include the line "The sysadmin was too busy playing all day to" to "The sysadmin was too overworked (I should really buy him something nice for sysadmin day) all day to"
In short, it's quite amazing all the "keys to the kingdom" we hold, and we know that. But let's not forget that people have to look at the doors to that kingdom everyday they enter said kingdom!
