Actually, current ergonomics says that the top of the monitor should be about eye level, putting the middle of the monitor about 10-15° downward. Also, the monitor should be tilted back appropriately so that your viewing angle is perpendicular to the screen.

Some other people say that it should be even lower:

Hmm. Interesting. I'd always tried to put my monitors in a place such that when I'm looking ahead at a normal angle, the middle of the screen is at my eye level. That gives me the easiest way to sweep up and down - but this is on a 24 inch screen. The first example you posted on was for CRT monitors, which typically had a lot of up and down angle adjustment from the base - most modern LCD monitors are straight up and down, and only some have vertical angle adjustments.

My monitors are all on stands. They are eye level.

I took a panoramic shot of my home office here:

It's a bit messy, as you can see. I've got my Tablet PC setup, along with my desktop (the left two monitors) and my work laptop (on the right and on the far right monitor). I've also got various other toys and stuff, some of which I've labeled on the photo.

Some of you might notice a Guitar Hero controller hidden behind my real guitars. I found some software, courtesy of MAKE: Magazine, that let's me plug it into my computer and play real music.
