"James Doohan, who fielded the request "Beam me up" as the starship Enterprise's engineer Scotty in the tar Trek science-fiction television series and subsequent films, has died. He was 85. Doohan died of pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease at his home in Redmond, Washington, this morning, the Associated Press reported, citing his agent Steve Stevens. His wife was with him, AP said. The actor also suffered from Parkinson's disease, diabetes and lung fibrosis and used a wheelchair."



If I recall correctly, someone looked at the scripts of all of the original Star Trek episodes and no one ever actually said "Beam me up Scotty." I think most of us remember watching him, either when it was on originally or in perpetual reruns during the 80's as the Star Trek movies were big. DeForrest Kelly, who played Dr. McCoy died June 11, 1999. That really only leaves Shatner (Kirk) and Nimoy (Spock) as the major surviving characters. It's sad when your generation of beloved TV characters that you grew up to know and enjoy start passing away. It really exposes your own mortality and hopefully builds a better appreciation for life. I know when I'm 85 (God-willing) and I start to hear things like 'Ben Affleck passes away at 91' or 'Jessica Alba at 78,' my kids or grandkids will probably not see it the same way as I will.

Rest in peace, James. You will always be the best starship engineer any sci-fi show will ever have.

I had the great honor of meeting Mr. Doohan at a convention and having a brief chat with him. He was an articulate and gracious man who appreciated his fans and never let his head get too big. I was saddened when I heard that he had developed Alzheimer's a few years back and was saddened again to hear of his passing today.

Rest in peace, James. You will always be the best starship engineer any sci-fi show will ever have.

Only major actors left are Shatner and Nimoy? Did you forget about the female major characters on the show? Actors who performed in every episode? Or are you talking about how much they got paid?

I have also heard that Doohan was very gracious in all interactions with fans. That's wonderful.

Other than Lt. Uhura, there weren't any female major characters as far as I remember. Yes, a number of extras and people who made repeat appearances, but hey.. that's not really the topic of the thread.

Scotty is one of the reasons why I do what I do today. I'm an electrical engineer at Fermi National Laboratory. I used to watch him design/fix things and I just ate it up.

My kids watch it now and say what a cheesy show, lousy special effects. Then I say, "Son in my day a show did not need great special effects to be a great show". He still doesn't get it...

I'll have a wee bit of ale tonight for the great memories!!!
