Sanyo Packs Double the Data Onto CD-R

As someone who never seems to have enough storage, I find this announcement quite exciting - but I wonder if it's come too late? You can now buy a 2X DVD-R for as low as $264 US. Let's say that optimistically the double-data CD-R is everywhere in the market 12 months from now (which is almost impossible). A year from now, I'm willing to bet that DVD burners will be around $150 US, and offering 4.3 GB of storage from the get go. Is Sanyo too little too late?

"Sanyo Electric has introduced a CD drive which can read and write twice the normal amount of data onto a conventional CD-R disc, the company announced Wednesday. When data is recorded with the CRD-BPDV2 drive for HD-Burn, a 700MB CD-R can hold 1.4GB of data. This will allow the recording medium to hold up to two hours of video, according to a Sanyo representative, who declined to give his name. This allows users to record more data at low cost. At retail stores in Japan, CD-Rs are priced around 98 cents, while DVD-R costs about five time more."

My take on this would be that it would depend on the price of the disks. Right now CD-Rs are practically free. They are literally free if you want to bother with rebates :lol:

Where as, DVD-Rs are still around 1$ apiece if you buy them in lots of 100 and DVD+Rs are $3.50-$4.00 in lots of 100.

I don't think twice about burning a CD-R, heck I use CDs now instead of Floppies but when the media starts costing more I have to be more selective in my use. As long as Sanyo keeps the price of the burner down, I'll stick with the CDs for now. :wink:

This is all subject to change if the DVD-Rs become comparably priced though :twisted:

I'd wager they'll be well under $100 a year from now. At this rate they'll be well under $100 by Xmas.
Best deals on the media are still around $3.50 for DVD-R but that's dropping like a rock too.
I'd say too little too late for double density CD-RW

I've seen these high capacity CDRs before. The biggest problem is that no other drives can read these discs. The great appeal of CDR is that you can make a disc and almost any modern computer can read it.

These are different - they'll be readable by any DVD player, unlike the Sony drives.
