my segway ht takes the streets. i live in one of the 32 states that allow the segway on sidewalks, but that doesn't mean i take them. that said, people use the sidewalks for bikes and skateboards all the time, laws are selectively enforced it seems.

"young punk" well, perhaps, the units are $5,000 you need be over 18 for the most part to have one, and you need to take training classes, if there are people who are going to do things with old ladies and tomatoes they're going to do that, segway ht or not. i'm not sure they are many young punks that have $5,000 to blow.

I'm waiting for the three wheeler version with a high powered super soaker built in.
if you look on the site, there are baskets. i could get a bell if needed, or a head light. but i don't ride at dark, so i don't need a headlight.

it doesn't really rain hard in seattle, just a mist so it's fine, the segway ht can get really wet, it's pretty much water proof in that regard.

i don't think there will be a 3 wheeled version with a super-soaker any time soon.

cheers,
pt

An excellent use for the white LEDs. Low power use and super bright. Add one of those to the top of the handles and one at the base (Hi beam/low beam ) and a couple of red ones on the back of the wheel protectors and for good measure, a "third brake light" on the back of the helmet and you're golden!

I'm telling you, there's a big market in the after market accessories here. It's embryonic now, but give it time. The after market industry for cars in the U.S. alone was $135 billion in 2001.

congrats pt and thanks for the informative site. i just hope that segway concentrates on getting some canadian cities to accept their use on the sidewalk. i'd love to use it in vancouver. my commute to work is only about 2 km and i walk on most days (15 minutes), but i have been a huge fan of the short trip replacement use. most of my daily trips are withing 5-10 km radius and i see this as the perfect method of getting around for these tasks.

one question though, why the big secret around dean's house? he did a tour of it for one of the network newsmagazines. was it something that was just too personal to share?

Default You misunderstand me

the young punks will be run down by vengeful old ladies. around here we don;t ahve many bikers on the sidewalks except on off hours. our suburbs don;t really have sidewalks and the roads are dangerous. if it can take mud they will be able to use bike paths since only half are paved. interesting, so seattle is like a mist tent. i think i might get an ht just so i can ring the bell and put a bow on my basket. not that i like being conspicous. do they have orange ht's? okay, i'm not serious. but that thanks for the info.

My driveway is longer and more hilly than PT's commute to work and my mountain bike works pretty well for going to the mailbox and beyond. I guess a bike doesn't have the "geek" factor but it sure makes more sense.

My bet is that it will wind up in the back of the garage when the new wears off.

I don't know about that. I saw some video of the HTs doing the streets of San Francisco and they didn't look like they were having any issues. Maybe there is a "geek factor" to the HT, but a mountain bike also means lots of pedaling, and I think PT covered why that's not so bueno for him (Or many others.).

Why would an HT be any more or less likely to "wind up in the back of the garage" than your mountain bike?
