Default PDA keyboard key placements?

Does anyone know why the keys on the thumbboards for PDAs like the UX50, and the Zaurus line are placed very ackwardly? I've had these PDAs before, and the keys are not in the same position compared to a regular keyboard. When I used them, I (way) too frequently hit a key next to the intended key. Why can't they make the alphabetical keyboard layout like the ordinary keyboard?

Because Microsoft owns the rights to the standard keyboard layout and other OS OEMs aren't allowed to use it? They do license it to Apple though for compatibility with MS Office for MAC
