Default Longhorn

What exactly does everyone know about MS's next "big thing", Longhorn? Has anyone here seen it in real life? What do we know about WinFS?

Furthermore, who gets pre-release copies of it? How can I get one?

We have started a Microsoft Student Community at my university, and Microsoft said they'll supply us with the latest Longhorn release (+ Whidbey and ASP 2.0) - sweeet!

Maybe I should apply! It's only a few thousand miles away...

More questions:

What's the difference between Avalon, WinFS, and Indigo?

Just found this on LonghornBlogs.com:

"Lately, I've been innundated with e-mails from people asking for copies of Longhorn. I'd love to respond individually, but I figured it would probably be a good idea to let everyone know all at once.

The version of Longhorn currently being distributed is a “Developer Preview”, and is a pre-beta release. It is meant to be, for now, just that, a preview for developers. In many cases, it is very unstable. A beta is not scheduled to begin until Spring/Summer 2004.

If you would like to be on the beta at that time, your best bet would be to visit http://www.betaplace.com and sign in using your .NET Passport. When prompted, enter the GuestID 'BetaReq' and then go to the Potential Testers program, and fill out their application.

I will keep the e-mails that I have, and forward them to the proper people when the beta comes around. That's about the only thing you can do, besides purchasing a MSDN subscription and ordering it from MSDN.

*shrugs* sorry guys. If anything else comes along, I'll keep you posted."

MSDN Subscribers can get the current "pre-alpha" release. So did attendess of PDC03. Thing is, it's still so early in it's stages and so much will change, that you can't really say a whole lot about it yet.

Heh heh heh, I love my dad's MSDN subscription.... I think I'll wait until he gets the beta to try installing it though, Windows can be unstable enough in the full release version...

I was at a .NET usergroup meeting a couple of weeks ago, and if I remember correctly Avalon is the visual part of the OS (graphics etc.), WinFS is the File System part (FS ) and Indigo is the communication part. This is of course a very rough description.

And David, you are of course welcome to join our group if you ever enroll at NTNU

Well, it will be huge to install, around twice the harddrive space of our 'current' release, it will devour RAM like crazy, and it wont be released until Q2-04. Seeing that they are crurrently still on pre-beta, i'd say it wont be out until Q3-04, or maybe even Q4-04.

It'd be worth it! Yes, I have my brand new PC up and running. It's SO nice to have a fast computer again! Black aluminum case, big window on the side with a 4-color LED fan, blue cold cathode tube...

I only ( ) have 512 MB of DDR 400 installed right now - probably double it before I go off to school. The specs right now are:

-ASUS P4S800 mobo (8x AGP, 800 MHz FSB, DDR 400)
-P4 @ 2.6 GHz with Hyperthreading (faster than a non-HT 2.8)
-512 MB DDR RAM @ 400 (PC3200)
-Decent video card and 7200 rpm hard drive

Now I just need an impressive name for it.....hmmm...
