Instead of what? The Sprint service is for broadcast TV, MS Portrait is for audio and video conferencing. I don't see how the two are anything alike.

The simple reason for that is that the broadcast TV service is Java based. So it requires a Java client on the phone. The G1000 doesn't have one so it cannot do it. I suppose one could probably buy a Java implementation for PPC (does one exist that can bought?) then it could very well be supported in it. As for the SPH i700? Well either its the stupid marketing folks or maybe Sprint might introduce that device in the future. Unlikely though. When was the last time you saw Sprint try to bring out a device that others also carry? After all most Samsung Palm based smartphones are Sprint specific.

If you have a tv tuner or capture card you can use MS Portrait or Windows Media Encoder to broadcast a channel to your Pocket PC. Of course it looks a lot better the more bandwidth you have, even using a GPRS connection across bluetooth is probably better than what sprint will be offering with this new service. I'd recommend using Windows Media Encoder as it seems to be more stable than MS Portrait. Unfortunately I can't change the channel of my Directv receiver when I'm away, so I just use it for watching a certain game when I'm going to be out. Better than missing a game entirely! :wink:

I was talking to some folks at Sprint last week and they are planning on rolling out the Samsung i700 with the new PocketPC Phone Edition 2003 OS with hopeful queue time of 1H 2004 as well as a Smartphone sporting the newer Smartphone 2003 OS...They felt consumers would want the latest and greatest rather than having to go through an upgrade process.

And for fans of Bluetooth(sorry to start this again Ed ops: ), but they are looking at carrying some Bluetooth enabled phones for 2004 due to the numerous requests from customers and their own internal people, we will have to wait and see what actually comes down the pipe...

tv2phone.com has links to streaming video using WMP and Real player (free download). Some are live, some recorded. Many links work while synced in the cradle. Tested on Audiovox Thera and Samsung i600. Works on CDMA 1x network. Not tested on GPRS. WI-FI OK.
