Default Casio & LG Team-up on Waterproof cellphone

http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/tech/200512/kt2005121516312111790.htm

"LG Telecom, Korea’s smallest mobile operator, Thursday took the wraps off the nation’s first waterproof mobile phone, canU 502S, developed under alliance with Japanese firm Casio Computer. "If dropped in a pool, tub or sink, this phone will survive in roughly thirty minutes since we sealed its tiny crevices with rubber packing,’’ LG Telecom spokesman Kang Shin-koo said. Two big holes for a speaker and built-in camera module were also specially treated to prevent water from soaking into the handset through them. Its other strength is that the model can endure shocks in case of accidental drops because materials such as urethane and glass were employed that are resistant to such shocks."

I always felt that Casio made a good durable handheld. It looks like they have teamed up with LG to continue this trend. I don't know how many waterproof phones the world needs, but it's nice to see that they are looking at ways to build a stronger, more durable device.

Personally I've never felt like I needed a waterproof phone, but I've got a lenghty list of friends who have dropped phones in puddles or toilets, gone swimming in their clothes, or in some cases just lost track of their phone for a couple of days and found it looking a little ragged with no explanation.

Alcohol and delicate electronics don't mix. America needs waterproof, shock proof mobile phones.
