HELP: Text input on BJII

I just got a BJ II and it is making me feel really stupid (and mad).
I can not enter text on it. When I go to a text input field and hit one of the number/letter keys (like 1E), I get the number. How do I turn the number pad off?

The FN and Caps/Shift keys don't seem to do anything.

Well,
I reset the phone and it appears to work.
So after the reset, I again used Sprite Backup to restore my settings (just like I had when I took the phone out of the box). Again, after the restore, the phone will not respond to the FN or Shift keys. The number pad is stuck on and the other letters only display in all caps.
Guess I will reset the phone again and not restore stuff using Sprite
