I don't have the same problem as you, but I haven't had it working right on my PPC yet.

I've known about not restoring from an old backup, so I know that's not the issue - and unlike others here, I've never gotten it to work correctly, not even once.

I've emailed the Gmail team about the problem with SMTP from outlook on the desktop, and the problem with all the messages disappearing on the PPC after doing a send receive. I never received a response

Here is what I did to get it to work. Doesn't work otherwise.

Also, with sending email I have to change the SMTP server depending on my connection. On GPRS, my provider is Optus and I use the server mail.optusnet.com.au, but at home I have TPG Broadband so use mail.tpg.com.au.

Good luck!

I have a related question regarding sending email using Pocket Outlook wth Gmail.

I use a mail alias (e.g. johndoe@blah.org) that redirects to my Gmail account (e.g. john.dodo@gmail.com). I would prefer outgoing emails to have the Reply-To field set to johndoe@blah.org so that when people reply to me, that address will be what they reply to rather than my gmail.com address as the blah.org address has been the address I have used forever.

Currently, I have my PC installation Outlook set up to supply my blah.org address in the Reply-To field and have Autosync handle sending of emails from my Pocket PC. This works fine - emails sent from my Pocket Outlook account have the Reply-To field tacked on when Autosync sends the email vi my PC Outlook client.

I tried configuring my Pocket Outlook client to send email directly to gmail.com (without needing to use Autosync). Emails go out fine however I cannot see any way to set my Reply-To field. I have tried:
  • 1. setting the Reply-To setting in my gmail.com Preferences. This works fine for mail sent using the gmail.com web client but seems to be ignored by Pocket Outlook-sourced emails.
    2. setting the e-mail address to john.dodo@blah.org when setting up a new account in Pocket Outlook. Pocket Outlook-sourced emails just keep going out with my john.dodo@gmail.com address.

Can anyone help me with getting Reply-To to be set for Pocket Outlook-sourced emails using gmail.com ? I'd really like to remove my laptop from the process for sending gmail.com emails using my Pocket PC.

tia

1. Login to Gmail - then click on "Settings".
2. Select the "Fowarding and POP" tab under "Mail Settings"
3. Select your "POP Download" option ("Enable POP for all mail" is probably the preferred option), and modify any other relevant POP settings, and then select "Save Changes".
4. Next, open "Messaging" on the Pocket PC.
5. Navigate to "Tools" > "New Account..."
6. Step 1 requires you to enter in your email address - so enter in your full Gmail address in the format, username@gmail.com .
7. Step 2 involves auto-configuration, so let it do what's necessary and then proceed on to the next step (Step 3) which involves your user information. Here, you should enter your full name in the first text field, your full Gmail address in the user name field, and your Gmail password in the password field.
8. In Step 4, select POP3 as the account type, and type in a suitable account name (e.g. Gmail).
9. The final step requires you to specify incoming and outgoing mail servers. Incoming mail should be pop.gmail.com and outgoing mail should be set as smtp.gmail.com.
10. Before you finish, select Options - here you should tick the "Require SSL connection" box and the "Outgoing mail requires authentication" box and configure anything else according to your personal preferences.

For the first time, you may get prompted with an invalid certificate. Ignore it - it should still work. Normally, I don't use Gmail POP, but I did test it out for you, and the steps I outlined above work perfectly on my device. Hope that helps.

Thanks Darius! But I still could not get the emails from the pop server until I uncked the box "Only display messages from the last [3] days". After that I was able to get messages but they are very old but not the recent messages.

On the Gmail web-site email settings, I have the following set under Forwarding and POP

1. Status: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since Jul 8
2. When messages are accessed with POP [keep Gmail's copy in the Inbox]

Sorry for the late reply.

If I recall correctly, there was one other user having problems getting Gmail POP to work with Windows Mobile 5.0. Let me look into it a bit more, and if I make any discoveries, I'll keep you posted.
