You can download and install this PHP script and then access it from any browser. It works great on my handhelds:

The cool thing about these is both support all the main features of GMail, so you can archive things or view your filters or whatever. I can't imagine how that will be possible with just simple POP access.

I was about to make a similar post. Gmail-Lite has been working fine for me for quite some time now.
You can take a peek of it at http://gmail.pocketmatrix.com but I don't think Chris had time to fully set it up, but you can give it a go using demo/demo to login. I use a private server that works, and have to say, it's very nice.
Regarding the POP3 on Gmail, this feature has been in beta for some time now if you ever bother reading the "new features" page from time to time. It's my understanding that POP access is free during the beta process, however, like yahoo, there could be a fee involved later on when gmail goes public. I sure hope not
