A few weeks ago I downloaded a very interesting battery white paper from Compaq - but I can't find who sent me the URL or what that URL was. At any rate, this PDF file is a very interesting read for those of us interested in battery life. Wonder where Compaq got the "12 hours of battery life" figure from? Not using the backlight at all. Tsk tsk. Battery life should always reflect real-life use, or given in a range.

Maybe they tested it on an 38xx with a defective backlight that didn't turn on during testing :lol:

Actulay they are using simal test to palm

you know the palm color dvices can work for several weeks

based on back light being off and using for no more than 11seconds a day

seriously to my knowledge all of the batery lifes for all of the pocket pcs are based on Best conditions being back light off and no sound

Here's a bit of irony for you:

OK so Compaq says the battery can give 12 hours of life. But Compaq also says to charge the battery as often as possible because if you let it run down, it will become permanently damaged (resulting in fewer hours of battery life per charge).

Here's the irony part - you only get 12 hour once. After that, your battery is screwed and you get what the rest of us are getting (somewhere between 2 and 5 hours if you're lucky).

I'm getting concerned about my foray into the PocketPC world. I plumped for an iPAQ 3850 as it had such rave reviews. Now that I've bought it and I've started subscribing to forums like this I read about backlight problems (which I have), SD cards that get eaten and now leaky batteries.

It was close between the e310 and the iPAQ - perhaps I should see if Dixons will exchange. An article I read recently stated that the Toshiba didn't have a leaky battery. I have two colleagues with the iPAQ 3630 and both of them have iPAQ's that run from the mains and what is the point of that.

Anyone got any comments to make on the iPAQ battery - I do not recall the documentation warning me in big letters to keep the thing charged every few days. Nor did the store I bought it from have any knowledge of the iPAQ issues when they sold it to me.

I haven't heard of this "leaky" battery issue, but the 38xx and 39xx series have a controller on the battery that won't let it be "damaged" by a low level of power (unlike the 36xx series).
