The built in calculator is pretty painful to use... until you figure out the shortcuts that is! After punching in a number, you can use the directional pad to choose a mathematical operation:

Up: add
Down: subtract
Right: multiply
Left: divide

Then type in a another number and hit the action button for "equals"

Once you've got this down, the Smartphone calculator can actually come in handy

Toggling through the # key will also get the arithmetic operators.

Also, don't forget that the * gets you a decimal point.
