Worldwide, PDA sales are down over 10% even though they are up in Europe for the same period, where the Pocket PC and other Windows CE devices lead the pack.



Pocket PC is nearly 27% looking at just HP, Toshiba and Dell. I do know that Medion is 2.1% of the total and buried in the "other" numbers, so that puts the Pocket PC at 29% before taking into account ViewSonic, NEC and other smaller players. The only other well known vendor in Other is Handspring.

Ed, I assume that Palms numbers are total sales, consumer and enterprise. Yet we never see the Pocket PC numbers for comanies such as Symbol, and Intermec who put out some rather large numbers, which would change the look of these reports. Am I correct?

I think those are included, but would be in the "other" category. Reports from NPD Intellect typically ignore them because they focus on retail, but IDC I believe tries to account for everything. Good point though - that means the PPC is probably well over 30% when you throw Intermec and Symbol into the mix. You have to assume they are under 3% each though as that seems to be the cutoff for this report before getting dumped into "other."

I'm sorry I can't remeber either companies numbers, but I have heard them, and it seems to me they would make quite a significant change. (larger than 3%)

Don’t you think the drop in sales is due to the transition period particularly in Pocket PCs, the introduction of the new operating system, plus the new CPU? Don’t you think there will better figures after Q3 in 2003. I believe consumers were looking forward to buy a new unite that includes the latest technology. This point could reflect on the sales in Q3

I know GFunkMagic, but what have they done lately? The PPT 8800 line is Windows Mobile 2003. The last Palm device I have seen from them is the SPT 1800, which is a PalmOS4 device. The SPT 1550 is even older.

I've seen several large purchases over the past few years from Symbol announcing PPC based devices, like Pepsi and UPS. I just haven't seen similar announcements on PalmOS devices. Do you have any stats?

Aren't Palm's numbers inflated greatly by Sales of the original $99 Zire? I had read that those were hot sellers. The reality is that the Zire's limited features really should move it into a different category IMO.
