Default Upgrade Ipaq 3970 to WM2003 - legal? Reversible?

I discovered my old 3970 in a box in the attic the other day, and found after a full recharge that it still works nicely. Also found an old BT GPS mouse...

So now I would like to try to get Tomtom to run on the 3970, but this 3970 is still running WM2002 (rom 2.10) and TT needs 2003 at least..

I checked the HP site and found that there's a download section for drivers and stuff for WM2003 so it is possible to upgrade. But the HP site only offers to upgrade to WM 5.

In several places I have found links to an upgrade rom, including this forum. Are these legal?

Is the upgrade reversible? If so, how do you proceed?

Thanks!

Well, there's a link on the HP site between the tool dl's. I didn't follow it as I don't want 5, I need 2003.

Can you have a look at my questions and see if you can help me out with those? Thanks!

Kuro,

I can't speak to the legality of what you are attempting to do, however, if HP no longer offers the 2003 upgrade, and you are able to locate it, AND, and the device is discontinued...I would say that you are likely welcome to do with it as you please.

With regard to the actual process of flashing the bios...

Unless you are able to locate a 2002 rom image (unlikely) then your choice uni-directional. Meaning, once you flash to 2003, you are not able to go back.

Here is some reading regarding the whole reflashing process in general, Though the device discussed is a different model, the software and process (except for the button combos) would otherwise be similar.

I'm affraid that is all I can offer. In closing, you should consider this site as well; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=325727 they do quite a bit of this sort of thing...

Good luck

Thanks! Located the upgrade and the program allows going back to 2002 if needed.

The links you provided show WM6 for HX4700. I have a 4700, still running 2300SE.

What's the WM6 stuff about? Is it a hacked version, because the legit versions seem to go up to only 5?
