Then I'm almost sure that you need authentication for your SMTP server. Otherwise, it would be an open relay, and as the link suggests, that's a bad, bad thing.
The only time you shouldn't need authentication is when you use an SMTP server that's from your local network, e.g., Roadrunner's at home or the company's or the company's ISP at work.
If you're using this 3rd-party SMTP server, and if you haven't already, try putting a checkmark in the appropriate option in Inbox and see if that helps.
