Default New WiFi Firmware/Drivers for 5550 available

There are Softpaqs containing new WiFi Firmware & Drivers for 5550 available on the HP site.

Fixes include a memory leak plugged and signal strength indicator fixed (again).

Anyone tried these?

There actually seem to be four updates. There are two driver updates: and two firmware updates:All of the updates provide "additional safety" when updating the firmware.

If that isn't confusing enough, most of the updates also have prerequisites, some cascading to multiple previous updates. Why couldn't HP roll them up into one update? And why can't they make the prerequisite updates have numbers less than the number of an update?

Also, the second update in each list includes WPA support. If you install that but don't use WPA, will it kill WEP support or just supplement it?

Finally, where is the signal strength indicator? I don't think I've ever seen one on my 5550.

Steve

P.S. When you mention something like this, please post a link to the page; don't make everybody dig for it. Here's HP's iPAQ 5550 Update page.

I thought that there were different sites for different countries, so that a single URL would be misleading?

If you tap on the Connection Icon on the top of the screen (the arrows pointing right and left) it pops up a wee dialog with the option to "Turn On Flight Mode". Somewhere on that box is a tiny bar graph showing the signal strength.

Oh, that ridiculous little thing. I was hoping there was something like most wireless LAN drivers include that showed signal strength and quality as bar graphs.

But thanks for pointing that out.

There may well be such a thing buried away somewhere, but neither you or I have discovered it yet! Whatever it is and wherever it is, HP keep on "fixing" it...

Maybe one of the products like WiFiFoFum will produce one worthy of the name.

Ok, so can someone explain clearly why there are two versions of the new firmware update and two versions of the WLAN driver? Why WOULDN'T you just install the driver/firmware with WPA support? What I really need is working LEAP drivers, so far LEAP doesn't work in my office environment unless our AP's are reconfigured to support older LEAP protocols which our network administrator doesn't want to do in the production environment.

Now I'm even more confused... the WLAN update says that the firmware must be installed first and the firmware update says the WLAN update must be installed first. UGH, stupid HP and their crappy softpaqs.

Wow, that is confusing. It took some dancing with the AP and iPAQ's settings to get it connecting w/ WEP the first time, then again after the ROM upgrade. I think I'll wait until these get consolidated or someone tries it and tells us if it really gives us anything important.

I just applied the WPA driver and firmware (in that order) and so far so good.. I haven't turned on WPA on my AP yet. Perhaps tonight.
