I just switched from a Palm IIIc to an iPAQ 3835. The most notable lack I've seen so far is that there doesn't seem to be a freeware community around the PocketPC. I've done numerous google searches, download.com, pocketPCcity, etc... and I only find a few apps...

Anyhow, I'd appreciate help finding the following apps (freeware preferable):

1) Alarm Clock... the built in alarm is weak. I'd like to have something that allows a bit more control and is easier to snooze/disable with the flip clover closed (say use the record button or power button)

2) Encrypted password storage

3) TODO lists with alarms! I've been playing with ListPro and it seems like it might work out, but the alarms are not persistent. I need to be reminded to do things, and I need it to keep screaming at me until I accnowledge it! Even better if it stores the data in the same DB as the built in todo list (like DateBk4 on the Palm)

Have you checked Freeware PPC?

What flip cover? :-) Most Pocket PCs don't come with them.

Do you mean programs to store your passwords in, or programs to encrypt your files with?

If the former, they aren't free, but check out eWallet, CodeWallet Pro and Virtual Wallet.

If the latter, I got F-Secure File Crypto free with my iPAQ 3870. If you don't have an iPAQ, check out File Crypto and PDA Secure Premium.

As you know, the Tasks program in Pocket Outlook is for To Do lists. The alarms only go off at the start of your day, which I think is stupid (you set an alarm date, but not time), and there's no repeating.

If you have fewer than four items, and the event is less than a week ahead, you can use the Clock applet in settings for repeating alarms.

There are also many PIM replacement programs out there, but most of those aren't free. Check out AgendaFusion and Pocket Informant for two.

Alternatively, something like RemindMe might be interesting.

Some of those non-freeware programs were finalists and award winners for the Pocket PC Magazine Best Software Awards 2002.

I'm working on one with a friend, but as I'm also trying to finish my PhD, it's not even close to being a top priority. I'm shooting for being finished no later than the end of January, sooner if possible. But like I said - I'm pretty busy work-wise.

I just switched from a Palm m505 to a Toshiba e335 and I will have to say that Agenda Fusion and Code wallet are excellent programs, as is Personal Vehicle Manager.

So far I haven't found a decent shopping list program that compares to SplashShopper on the Palm but, sooner or later I will find one I like.

Overall I am very happy with the Pocket PC

Well I am not sure if this will help you. I can't tell since I never try it myself. It;s really a shopping tool build on top of database.
