Default how to change message alert tone

I can change ring tones just fine, but I can't add any new tones for message/email/alarms. There's a dropdown menu of the tones available, but I don't like any of them. How can I use my own tone for my incoming SMS alerts?

You normally paste new ringtones into \Windows\Rings, correct? Try pasting any other sounds you want to use in \Windows only. It should then be available as an option in the drop-down menu for messages, e-mails, alarms and what not.

i pasted the tones in \windows but they're still not in the alarms dropdown menu. but they did show up in the rings dropdown menu (even though they are not saved in the \windows\rings folder).

What file format are these sounds in? They generally have to be WMA or WAV in order to be used as system sounds.
