Are you using the $20 AOL 2.0 from Handango? That is what I use with an IR modem and my iPAQ 2210. Works most of the time. AOL had a short time when it would not connect but they seem to have fixed that.
Make sure you get the version that works with Pocket PC 2002. The old version will not work on the Pocket PC 2002 or WM 2003 systems.

using the "free" aol UK version on my iPAQ 2215 works ok for instant messenger when I played with it... But I really don't use it regularly.
