I have both versions here at work and in my opinion, it's a bit of a toss-up.
3835 pros:
-
much better speaker/microphone
- comes with a GREAT protective sleeve (dropped mine in the parking lot - no damage other than scuffs)
- looks nifty
- SD card slot
- more software bundled (though I don't really use the extras)
- stylus won't get stuck if you put it in wrong.
- better colors (side by side you can
really see a difference, but they both look fine alone)
- cradle is both USB and serial
3835 cons:
- there are numerous problems (there's even a petition going over at
Brighthand.com trying to get the 38xx recalled - but that's going too far in my opinion)
- haven't tried myself, but I hear the SD slot doesn't work with most SD cards out there.
- gets REALLY sluggish with multiple apps open (although, rumor has it that Compaq's new ROM due this month will fix that problem on the 38xx)
3765 pros:
- much more stable than 38xx iPaqs - won't get bogged down, fewer resets
- not near as many disappointments (according to some) as the 3835
3765 cons:
- no SD slot
- crappy speaker
- no case included
- high-res pictures don't look that great (especially in shading areas)
SO...as I said, it's a bit of a toss-up. I personally like the 3835 better. I haven't encountered the problems that many of the folks at Brighthand have complained of - just had to send it in once for backlight repair.
Don't expect either to be perfect - unfortunately, they both still have to use PPC2002 - once Microsoft gets their act together and makes the OS more stable and user friendly, the world will be a better place to live. Until now, it still kicks Palm OS all over the place.
Good luck!! 8)
