When I tried to open either file, they wanted me to open the application that handles those file, and open them from that application. Anyone know how I can get Java onto my 6700, or else get Opera Mini installed?

Thanks for all comments, they led me to Opera mobile. I spent a few hours installing Opera mobile 9.5 (successfully), tried Opera mini 4.2 (couldn't patch 4.2 enough to load on my PPC 6700). Opera 9.5 is much improved over PIE, however the flash component and video player features are another story.
Success came when I happened upon Skyfire.....This free browser shows all of the rich content of nytimes, etc., and plays youtube videos without any patchwork. It even shows google maps street view...with ease!
I am keeping my PPC 6700 for a while! A desktop quality browser was what I was missing. Below are the youtube preview and browser links.
