I think GPS receivers have improved a lot. My first GPS (Fortuna GPSmart) was SiRF II, and I had to keep it on the dashboard right near the windshield. Last year I got a SiRF III GPS (Holux GPSlim 236), and it works fine from the glove compartment -- and getting a fix from a cold start takes less than a minute; the Fortuna had been known to take twenty minutes on a bad day.
