Pretec 4GB SD card is the newest addition of its high speed line of 133X SD card, from 256MB to 4GB, with access speed up to 20MB/s, the fastest SD card in the world so far conform to SD 1.1 specification. Constructed with 65 nano-meter 16Gb SLC NAND technology, which is typically one order of magnitude better reliability and 200%-500% faster than MLC NAND. Pretec 133X 4GB SD card is available now for customer sampling with unit price of $699 each, mass production is scheduled by next month. Pretec also announces the availability of 2GB MMC 4.x card (MMC Plus) today. With 8-bit data bus and 52MHz clock rate, MMC 4.x card can be 400% faster than today’s SD card commonly available in the market, or 200% faster than the latest SD 1.1 specification."

Yep your right I want one now. Imagine, it would go really nicely in my HTC Universal (when it comes out of course). I do however think that it is a little expensive!! At just over £350 each I could buy 8 1gb cards, now hows that for value!

I wonder how Jon Westfall is doing with his diet. I've gained 10lbs and this offer is not helping me but the price is still having a sobering effect. But once in mass production that should come down and by the time my diet runs out I should be able to find it for under $100 . Looks like Pretec is really on a 'peddle to the metal' technology roll which is really nice. Do they give out yellow jerseys for the current leaders in technology?
Personally I wouldn't buy this new 4 GB SD card until the price <= 4 x cheapest comparable speed\quality 1 GB SD card. If anything price per GB should be cheaper for bigger cards not more expensive.

When they first announced these, the press release said your device had to conform to sd 1.1.
Does that mean that most devices will not be compatible with this card? Or that most devices will just not be able to use the extra speed of the card?
They're backward compatible. So, you would still be able to use them on most standard devices - you just wouldn't feel the added speed boost (for now, anyway). Over the next year or two, I'm sure we'll see more and more Pocket PCs surface with the new spec.

With 1GB, you really get some good music capacity.
With 2GB, you can add some video.
With 4GB, you can comfortably have both!
For me, the current sweet spot is 1GB. This is a decent amount of space for MP3 files and my work data. With some of my music, work data and a couple of music videos, I still have 512MB left on my SD card. I'd probably use another 200MB with a nicer selection of music.
I just couldn't justify getting a 2GB card. It's enough for a couple of movies and a few more MP3's, but I always felt hald back by the capacity.
4GB opens up a whole new world. Now you can have several movies, plenty of MP3 and work data. No problem with capacity. Now the other problems:
a) Battery capcity. There's no way you're going to have enough juice to last through a couple of movies.
b) Price. For high-end SD cards, I don't pay more than $200. So I'll have to wait.
My first vacation in 6 years will be next year to Europe, and I'm leaving from California. I'll be in the air for hours, so having plenty of movies and music on tap will be important. I'm calling the airlines I'll be taking to see if they have any power-ports for electronic devices. And since my trip is next year, hopefully the price of these 4GB wonders will be in my range.
