Being a recent convertee(?) to the Palm Treo 700w from the Verizon XV6700 due to the Apache's unpredictable "dark screen of death" (DSOD) syndrome, I was happy to read this review end-to-end to pick up on things
You gave up a Wizard and went thru all those other devices to end up with a memory deficient Treo?
Interestingly enough, while the memory is a bit deficient for sure, I don't see that as the Treo's biggest "downside". I don't understand why Palm did it that way, but for the most part it works okay.
This is one of the best reviews of the 700w I've seen - and it's only part 1 (OK, I'm a bit biased, but the truth is the truth!). Looking forward to part 2 Janak!
Thanks, Jon. I spent way too much time on this, so I'm just glad it's done. Part 2 is even longer than the first, so I'm looking forward to seeing it hit the frontpage. 8)

Agreed, very well done! I bought the 6700 sprint model only to return it. After that experience I was leaning to the 700p more that ever. I will give the 700w a good look.
I'm wondering if you have any lag in typing when low on memory? The 6700 would miss letters when typing on it!? That drove me crazy.
I am a current Treo 650 user and sold off my Dell x50v to go towards whatever WM phone that would be good enough to replace my Treo!
This review has made me really eager for when the GSM 700w comes out
Of course, the million-dollar question is when it will come out. :| Hopefully sooner than later.

Yeah I hope it is fairly soon. If I sell my SP5 now I will get a good price for it, and the X50v with 2Gb CF should sell no problem. I hope it comes out at AU$1000-1100 or less (urgh those are huge numbers for a phone )

Just hope you can buy it outright. Otherwise, I can imagine a carrier such as Telstra forcing you to sign a contract worth both your kidneys. 8O

Oh I'm not worried about that. The day Telstra get a phone like the 700w before anybody else (let alone before you can get it outright) will be the day the world spins the other way.
I am relying on AnythingOnline ( http://www.anythingonline.com.au ) to get it. I got both my KJAM and SP5 from them, the SP5 in 2 days after order!

I just think it's amusing that Rafael gave up his K-JAM because "it wasn't powerful enough" then went to a JasJar, (I think a Jamin was in between there somewhere), then a 6700 and now a device that sports the following "cons" according to the review:
Quote:
Cons:
* Smaller, square screen incompatible with some applications;
* No WiFi; * Less than ideal memory; * So-so multimedia performance.
I gaveup the KJAM because the keyboard was often a bit inconvenient. i couldn't just shoot off an email or SMS with one hand. Even though I have to use T9 on the SP5, it was better.
Also the size of the KJAM with a case was huge. I tried carrying it without a case and it was just too dangerous with that large screen.
I have tried a Treo 650 and the keyboard was great! You can even use it one handed.

I can understand your point about the convienience of the Treo's keyboard over the K-JAM's. However, for someone who doesn't need that convienience , full keyboard of the Wizard/Apache devices is tough to beat.
As shown in the review pics, the Treo is really close in size to devices to the Apache and Wizard. It depends what kind of case you use with the Wizard as far a bulk goes. You can throw a case on the Treo and it would become bulky also.

The thing about the Treo is the screen is not as big as the KJAM, and thus less suceptable to breakage when caseless.
I have held the Treo 650 and it just feels nicer in the hand. Sturdier too. The KJAM just wasn't strong enough for my taste. Thats why I sold it on.
