Default OKWAP K728: The Rebellious Smartphone

http://www.phonedaily.com/news/?news_id=4424

We rarely post on Smartphones here at Pocket PC Thoughts. After all, that's the role of our sister site, Smartphone Thoughts. But I thought this device was worth bringing to your attention.

Yesterday, we showed you the OKWAP K868, a new Pocket PC Phone Edition being paraded at Computex in Taipei. Well, OKWAP happens to have another Windows Mobile-based device on show, and that is the K728 Smartphone. It's a neat little device - just 93.5mm x 46mm x 24.5mm and 107.8g, and packed with a Samsung S3C2442A 400MHz CPU, 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM, Bluetooth 2.0 (with A2DP support), tri-band GSM/GPRS support, a miniSD slot, a 2.0-megapixel camera, a 176 x 220 display, and Windows Mobile 5.0 with the MSFP. But above all that, it features basic touch screen support, which OKWAP added in, despite the Smartphone version of Windows Mobile not directly supporting touch screen input.

Could this be a sign that one day, Pocket PCs and Smartphones will become one?

Wow?

....and how does a 176 x 220 display work with WM 5.0?

O Kwap! Dat's a gwate idea... (yes, I win the prize for corny, I know).

I hope that when Smartphone and Pocket PC do finally become one, PPC gains the Profile system that is included on Smartphone. It is so simple and so user-friendly in comparison to thrid party offerings and I can't understand why it wouldn't be included for PPC (at least the phone edition devices).

So what is the benefit of them using SP as opposed to PPC PE on this unit? Just curious, because I really don't know. I'm _assuming_ its because it would be optimized for the smaller screen.

Yes, small screen optimisation would be one factor, and the biggest in this case. But also, I think the Smartphone version of Windows Mobile is better suited to number pads, but I know that viewpoint varies from person to person.
