Won't help - if you look carefully, the drivers and registry entries are already present in WM5, and has been since Pocket PC 2002. To have USB host functionality (especially USB 2.0 as it is on this phone), you need hardware support implemented as well.

hi
what lends support to my WISH is the fact that when engadget had the htc universal for testing they mentioned that it had usb host feature and you could attach and use an externally powered hard drive.. but that was a protoype ..on the release version this feature was killed.. im guessing since the processor and hardware are the same of the prototype and the release version maybe its a software related obstacle and someone would be able to cross this hurdle soon!!!

This phone looks great, but I wish there were a few changes. I can't figure out why it's so difficult for manufacturers to go all the way with these devices instead of leaving out important components. I'd like to see one phone get it all right, for once.

1.) Needs quad-band GSM (what is the fixation on tri-band these days?)
2.) Needs EDGE (not everyone has 3G available to them, and not all who do can afford it).
3.) Needs dual-band UMTS

These three things would make any phone a true world-phone.

4.) Needs a VGA screen
5.) Needs 128MB RAM

These five changes would make this phone perfect, IMO. Other than this, the specs look fantastic!

I doubt it's software related - as I said, the drivers and corresponding registry entries are already present in Windows Mobile 5.0, as it was in WM2003SE on back. More specifically, it's a hardware connection that's usually missing - typically to the USB port - since Intel's PXA27x processors all support USB Host in hardware already. You need to be able to supply power through the port as well, which implies a further connection to the battery.

Cases in point are the HTC Magician, and the Universal as you've noted. I actually tested out a Magician for this, even added custom drivers (you can download WM2003SE drivers for free from Ratoc Systems - look up their CF USB Host card) - doesn't work.
