I thought this was a patch. From the Microsoft site, it looks almost like another career is entailed, if one were to read all that garbage and follow all those steps. Sorry, but I have a life and a job to deal with, not nearly enough hours in the day to cope with all that nonsense.
So I tried installing the CAB on my WM2003SE Toshiba e800. Failed, due to certificate problem as mentioned on their page (within the first bit, so I did read it that far). The official MS suggestion? Contact your device supplier for a certificate. Right. Toshiba is as likely to provide anything for the e800 as I am to sprout wings.
So I tried the (8MB+!!!) PC installer, and it failed, saying that I must first run Outlook and make it the default email client. Well I don't use Outlook on the PC, though it is installed (I keep forgetting to remove it). My kid uses Thunderbird for email, sometimes. Otherwise there's no mail done on the PC. So I was forced by this pile of junk patch to set up an account in Outlook for the first time, then make it the default. Failed again. Turns out I had to also un-set Thunderbird as the default mail client. That done, I tried a third time and succeeded, I think, though there was no real confirmation and no apparent way to check this. There is no interface beyond the very minimal installation dialogue.
So I then synched my PPC, and got told that there was no partnership! Okay, so I deleted the partnership (which had been in place and working just fine for over a year) and made a new one. I then set the rules so that information in Contacts and Calendar would be combined - what the heck, can't hurt to try Contact synching again after more than a year since the last failure... right? Wrong. It said there were over 1400 contacts out of synch. It also deleted a bunch of appointments - I forgot to change that option in the synch rules first, so my fault there I guess, though having the default set to wipe out PPC-originated appointments on first synch seems a trifle bizarre. The Contacts synch finished, eventually, and told me there were a pile of duplicates to delete, so I deleted them with the appropriate mouse click. Then I disconnected after updating the synch.
Guess what? I now had 701 contacts entries! No biggie, except that I have currently only 673 contacts entries. No way I'm going to manually check every... single... one... so I just restored Contacts, Categories, and Calendar databases from the backup I'd made just before running this whole fiasco. What a zoo Redmond must be! All those instructions, all this delay while we wait for the official patch... and they haven't got it right by a long shot. I hope my calendar works when DST kicks in. If it doesn't, well, time for another nasty email to Microsoft which will go on the 'ignore' pile along with every other one I've sent them over the years. If I ran my business like they do, I fear no one would ever walk through my door.
To be fair, this whole DST debacle should never have happened. Many of us Canadians protested against it, but of course the US Congress would never bother listening to the voices of those who comprise their largest trading partner. Tens ot thousands of business owners in Canada wrote letters, signed petitions, and otherwise made clear their distaste towards this monomaniacal infliction of US desire upon the world. To what end? A crappy little patch from MS and a load of hours wasted by millions of users, with dubious results. Nice work, George.
