Iguidance v4 works well with square screens. I use it with my Treo 700WX. I did the registry hack for all TTS announcements and liked it a lot more than the mixed announcements. I think the TTS sounds pretty clear and I like the speed of the TTS better than when it is mixed.

Could you describe the registry hack in detail? I'm only aware of being able to turn it off. I'd be interested in what the mixed-announcements allows. Thanks!

Mike

text to speech reg hack.

Quote:
* Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\iNav\iGuidance

* Right-click on empty space in the right pane, and then select New > DWORD

* Name it TTS

* Set the value to 0 to hear direction prompts consisting of only WAV

* Set the value to 1 to hear direction prompts consisting of WAV & TTS

* Set the value to 2 to hear direction prompts consisting of only TTS

0 = voice prompts as in older iGuidance versions (no street names)
1 = default voice prompts of iGuidance 4
2 = TTS (text-to-speech) used for the whole voice prompt (not just for street names)

Got it. Thanks. So you folks think setting '2' is most pleasing to the ear? I'll have to try it.

I'm not sure about pleasing but certainly less jaring.
But yes, 2 should give you all voice in the text to speech voice.

Hmm, one thing that I always wanted my Nav software to do was tell me which lane I need to get into. When you say it shows the shape of the street, can you distinguish which lane you are in?

That's another thing that sounds appealing, though admittedly, I rarely use the POI functions of my Nav software.

Thanks for the reply,

Actuall yes. This was another feature that really surprised me!

"In 400 yards, turn left and then stay in the left lane."

I was very excited when i heard that.

Default Preference?

Doug,

After trying iGuidance 4.0, Tomtom 6 and OCN6, which are you preferring at this point?

These 3 are so close it's almost impossible to call. But if I had to rank them, I'd choose OCN6 first, TomTom 6 second and iGuidance third.

I like OCN6's voice prompts best (aside from the lack of text-to-speech) in that it always gives the distance to the next turn. It has better warning tones and tells you when it's recalculating a route. And it has the best independent volume control of the 3, being the only one that's totally independent of system volume.

TomTom is a very close match to OCN6, lacking just the features that I listed above. It's a very competent package, and I'm looking forward to their next release.

iGuidance is again very close to the other 2 functionally. And it does have the text-to-speech feature, but it's a bit too rough in its current form for my tastes. I guess that's my biggest thing with iGuidance... compared to the polished design of the other 2, it just seems a bit rough around the edges. Map appearance and menu design is a click behind the other 2, IMO.

Thanks for the reply. Is TomTom due for a new release soon? I like the features of OCN6, but hate the idea of switching microSD cards in an out.
