Last Christmas I got a BT GPS receiver with SA 2007 to use with my X50v running WM2003. This is my first experience with using GPS. I found plenty of disappointments with SA 2007.
Route calculation on the PPC is just horrible. If it eventually returns a route, it is usually ludicrous or just plain wrong. Seemed clear to me that the Delorme programmers were total newbs to programming for the PPC. The desktop routing was fine but...
I found the exporting of maps to be a drag. If you want to send maps for an entire state to the PPC... it is a huge hassle. How about a 600 mile trip... say from Ohio to the Florida panhandle. By the time you have highlighted all those darn little map cells covering those 600 miles, you will be thinking, "There's got to be a better way!"
It would be a huge improvement if they would add a wizard or two to the desktop app to facilitate that sort of thing. "Export my State..." zzziiiiippp! it prepares PPC map files to cover the entire state - AND sizes them for optimum PPC performance. If you try to export a state, say Ohio, as one file - it creates a 100MB file and whines at you that opening that file on the PPC may not work very well. Duh!
How about a wizard to export maps for the area around my route? Q: how many miles would you like to be able to wander away from the route? zzziiiiippp!
Then there is the great "Off route" warnings on the PPC. Not so great. OK in town where the maps are spot on. Not so great when you are on state routes in less travelled areas. I discovered lots of places where apparently the Delorme mapping of the roads was sufficiently 'off' that I got the "Off route" warnings regularly - even when I was definitely on the route. I finally turned that feature off.
I've been hoping a Great upgrade would come along. It doesn't sound like SA2008 is it.
Jon, did you actually use the PPC to calculate any routes? Try a 100 - 300 mile trip, say from your house to Pittsburgh... assuming you have transferred map data for that entire region to your PPC. It ought to be pretty easy don't you think - duh! just follow the Interstates for 95% of the trip.
Then there is the map display - the little Asteroids style marker that moves across the map is just too darn small - a quick glance while you are driving - often you won't be able to locate it quick enough - it could be anywhere on the map when you take your look.
Does ANYONE have a recommendation for a better program? If not, it is tempting to shop for an all in one navigation system like a TomTom or Garmin. But I'd hate to do that after having invested in a BT receiver.
