Default Samsung Jack 6.5 Upgrade

http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...58&AT_ID=177858

"Samsung has released a software upgrade for the SGH-i637 (Jack) which is recommended to be installed. This update includes an upgrade to Windows Phone (Mobile) 6.5 and numerous software enhancements. The update may take between 5-10 minutes to complete if the system is already set up."

Yay! There's a Samsung Jack 6.5 upgrade out for your handsome and stylish Windows Mobile phone. It's always good when companies don't allow devices to become obsolete due to an upgrade. The site not only has the 6.5 download but it gives detailed image based instructions describing the upgrade process. So what are you waiting for? Head over and bring your Jack up to speed. Oh, and let us know how it goes and how you like it.

I did it yesterday afternoon. For anyone who's been keeping up on the details of Windows Phone 6.5, it'll be no surprise that on a non-touchscreen device like the Jack, there's little difference. Besides the new apps, the biggest visual difference is the "hourglass" or "wait cursor", which is now a set of colored orbs that spin around. Does give it a bit of a freshened look.

I tried the marketplace and it seems to work fine. Limited selection at this point, but they're just getting started. Pricing isn't bad, with a fair number of free and low priced apps.

The install itself went well, except that I had to manually restart afterwards, since the unit hung during the automatic restart. The manual restart did the trick.

They also claim that battery life was optimized and I did seem to see a bit of a difference. If that pans out, it might be the best reason to go ahead with this upgrade, since actual interface and functional changes are minimal.

Thanks for the update Doug. Did the Jack receive the new browser? How does it perform?
Ironically my battery life is so good now, I don't know if I would notice an improved battery life.
I guess I'll tackle it this weekend.

Hi Phillip...

Yes, it got the new browser. So far, I've been pretty much unimpressed. I got quite a few error messages on some sites that I frequent, and it just seems clumsier to navigate than Skyfire. A release or two down the road might get it up to snuff, but they have some pretty strong competitors already.

Hmmm... I've haven't been "wowed" by the battery life. Must be that my usage pattern differs from yours. It's not terrible, mind you, but nothing spectacular.

Doug

Thanks Doug,
Another question. If you use the predictive text settings, can you check to see if they fixed the 'Z' problem. Currently I am unable to spell words with Z in them.

I finally got the upgrade installed. But only after I read the fine print about the updater not working on 64 bit Vista or Windows 7. Luckily my wife let me install WMDC on her laptop.

The Z problem seems to be fixed in the predictive text.
I like the browser. Its a lot like Opera Mini to me. Only it seems much slower.
