Default What happened on Wed Oct 09, 2002 9:55 am?

On the bottom of the forums page, it says "Most users ever online was 2138 on Wed Oct 09, 2002 9:55 am"?

Anyone know what happened then? I don't every recall seeing that many users online here at one time. The date sounds about like when Dell announced their PPC.

I believe Dell released info on their ppc on Oct 10 so that can't be it.

I'd guess a slashdotting.

Perhaps it could be the Dell announcement. (or everyone wanted a cheap 128MB CF card  )

EDIT: Doesn't look like a slashdotting

Does anyone know if/when PPCT has been slashdotted? I can't remember seeing a link on /. to PPCT, but I've only been reading it for a couple months.

PPCT may not have been slashdotted, but it has been featured in a few news articles.

FWIW, none of us (the editors) have a clue what happened then, either. Your guesses are as good as ours.

My guess is that the massive number of hits was due to the fact that the new (current) site design was rolled out the previous day. It would have taken awhile for other sites to pick up on the news and link to us, so a day and change sounds like just about enough time for the flow of visitors to reach critical mass. 8)

That's a good a theory as any other. But you'd imagine the Jan. 1 contests would have had more traffic! And the site's membership has grown by now...

Maybe it was a bug in Fabrizio's PHP scripts...
