At first glance, I thought the same thing. But follow the link to pocketnow and the intent of the photos is more clear. They're meant to show a compare and contrast between how things are now and how things will be. So the very first picture of the calendar IS how things have been for years, and the one below it is the proposed replacement.

I agree that the lack of detailed information in the mail and calendar apps is something that I'd hope can be fixed in settings. SBSH Calendar Touch and the recently released PI9 (a touch friendly update of that perennial favorite) already fix that issue, at least for the calendar. Regardless of what MS does with the bundled PIM apps in WM7, I'm sure you're still going to need something like one of those 2 apps to get any real work done anyway.
